Women prisons in the Philippines 2016 - 2018

Since the end of June 2016, the new President Rodrigo Duterte has started a war on drugs, involving all the parties from consumers to dealers. This issue has been a key point of his campaign, vowing to stamp out the problem within six months with the killing of 100,000 drug-related criminals. Since June 2016 more than 12,000 filipinos have been killed by the Police and self-proclaimed groups of vigilantes, and the wave of killings shows no sign of subsiding. For fear of being executed, many people are turning themselves in to the Police, and also mass arrests have been done by the Police during the whole mandate. Prisons are heavily overcrowded, so as happens in security cells in Police stations, where often a high number of prisoners is clumped in a few square meters. Individual cells now hold up to twice or even three times their capacity, forcing prisoners to sleep virtually piled up on one another. This work in particular is focused on the conditions of female prisons in the Philippines. I have visited the two major female prisons in the country.

drug-related crimes. Each cell accommodates from fifty to sixty people. Cells are
equipped with a television and two fans. Beds are not enough for all the prisoners
and part of them sleep on the floor. Overcrowding of all the country's prisons is a
consequence of the war on drugs. Thousands of people have turned themselves in
for fear of extra-judicial executions.
