The dried-up land
Date of realization: August 2016
Country: Ethiopia
Ethiopia, Somali region, august 2016. In the last two years, Horn of Africa underwent the major drought in the last fifty years. As reported by FEWS (Famine Early Warning Systems Network), more than 10 million people require emergency food assistance in 2016, following El Niño-induced drought in 2015 (el Niño is a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific). In the Somali region, thousands of people are being displaced from their land, after having lost their livestock and crops, in search of sustenance. The first rains have begun, although determining floods due to the very dry land, incapable of absorbing water. The crisis is still serious and a return to normality is far away. I went in different areas in the Ethiopia Somali region to document the current situation.
